The Province of Quebec has led the way in the use of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy to improve the lives of children with Cerebral Palsy; Improvement is seen in gross motor function, improvements in fine motor function, reduction in spasticity, improvements in cognitive function and expression and significant reductions in custodial care time
Safe, effective, and non-invasive
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) has been shown to improve the quality of life in CP. To date Quebec has been the epicenter for most of the scientific study of this condition. Many forms of CP result from a lack of oxygen to the brain at birth.
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) has been considered as a potential adjunctive treatment for individuals with cerebral palsy (CP), though its effectiveness is still a subject of ongoing research. Here are some ways in which HBOT might theoretically offer support for individuals with CP:
- Increased Oxygen Delivery: This increased oxygen availability may enhance oxygen delivery to the brain, potentially supporting the function of oxygen-deprived areas in individuals with CP.
- Neuroprotection: HBOT’s increased oxygen levels may have neuroprotective effects, potentially helping to safeguard brain tissue and neurons.
- Anti-Inflammatory Effects: HBOT has demonstrated anti-inflammatory properties. Inflammation plays a role in certain neurological conditions, and by reducing inflammation, HBOT may positively impact the neurological environment.
- Stimulation of Angiogenesis: HBOT promotes the formation of new blood vessels (angiogenesis). This may contribute to improved blood flow to brain areas, potentially aiding tissue repair and regeneration.
- Functional Improvement: Some studies suggest that HBOT may lead to functional improvements in individuals with CP, including motor skills and cognitive functions. However, the extent of these improvements and the specific mechanisms involved are still areas of exploration.
HBOT can be effective in decreasing some of the symptoms and side effects related to the following conditions:
