HBOT and Fibromyalgia
It is estimated that fibromyalgia affects 900,000 Canadians or approximately 3% of the population. Women are estimated to be four to nine times more likely to develop the disease than men.
The term “fibromyalgia” started popping up in the 1990s and for a long time, it was a “throwaway” diagnosis. “We don’t know what’s wrong with you, so you must have fibromyalgia”. Unfortunately, that perspective has stayed in the minds of many doctors practicing today.
The most prominent symptoms of individuals with fibromyalgia include:
Chronic widespread pain in the body
Heightened pain response
Diffuse tenderness
Fatigue
Sleep disorders
We still don’t fully understand the root cause of Fibromyalgia. Studies from Israel conclude that it is an example of central nervous sensitization and is associated with abnormal brain activity.
A number of studies have shown hyperbaric oxygen to be an effective rapid and safe means for treating conditions various symptoms of Fibromyalgia.
The most comprehensive studies to date have shown HBOT to significantly improve the symptoms and quality of life in FM patients. In this study, HBOT was shown to induce neuroplasticity and significantly rectify abnormal brain activity in pain-related areas.
Future studies will continue to delineate a more detailed understanding of the role hyperbaric oxygen plays in providing relief to this patient population.
